Rakuten Kobo was able to abandon port covers for HZO Protection on their second generation waterproof eReader
Rakuten Kobo pioneered the digital reading industry by releasing one of the first waterproof eReaders on the market in 2014. The original Kobo Aura H2O achieved its IP67 protection capabilities (30 minute submersion in 1 meter of water) through port covers, sealing the device from harmful water and debris. Unfortunately these covers added product weight as well as the risk of water damage if the ports were not secured.
Given the success of the HZO Protected Kobo Aura ONE, Kobo knew the second generation of their popular waterproof eReader, the new Kobo Aura H2O, should be on par with its recent flagship device. Kobo engaged with HZO to apply HZO Protection to the internals of the new eReader, protecting the sensitive circuitry from water damage without the need for port covers and seals. Not only was Kobo and HZO able to eliminate the port covers and reduce the overall weight of the device, but the HZO Protection helped to increase the level of water protection from IP67 to IPX8 (up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water). Truly next generation protection for a next generation device.
